How can you comparison shop when the advertised prices are untrue?

While buyers assume that online car shopping and research would lead to a higher level of transparency and honesty, this is often not the case because advertised prices cannot always be trusted. As Scott Collore, General Manager at Dimmitt Chevrolet in Clearwater, Florida reports, “some dealers are up to no good. Their only goal is to get you into their store and they advertise untrue prices to lure you in. Once you’re there, the incentives disappear and the price goes up. That’s just not how Dimmitt Chevrolet does business. Dimmitt Chevrolet is committed to only advertise prices that we guarantee to honor for everyone.”

What Mr. Collore is speaking of is the “qualifying incentive” game. A practice where dealers advertised prices that include include false trade value guarantees, unattainable rebates and incentives for which most of the public does not qualify. Or worse, the incentives are stacked.

While real incentives do exist and are available for groups such as First Responders, Educators, College Students, and Active or Retired Military, these discounts are not available to everyone and should not be factored into a vehicle’s advertised price. Mr. Collore mentioned, “The factory will do what the factory will do and it’s great they have so many options available. Most people understand these programs. My issues are when other dealers advertise a selling price without a breakdown of how they got there, but obviously it includes a qualifier. They may stack rebates which means they are combining programs that are incompatible. Or, worse yet they create their own qualifying incentives.”

“‘Trade Assistance’ and ‘Finance Assistance’ from the dealer are the two most common dealer marketing schemes in the Tampa Bay market. While the factory does occasionally offer programs like these, they are not, in this case, manufacturer rebates or incentives. They are made up programs by other dealers… and, there is always a catch. Often, the stipulation is one that is near impossible to get. I’ve even seen them use the words “up to…” in a disclaimer. It’s like they really need a disclaimer for the disclaimer,” he said.
